چکیده

A stream-of-variation analysis (SOVA) model for three-dimensional (3D) rigid-body assemblies in a single station is developed. Both product and process information, such as part and fixture locating errors, are integrated in the model. The model represents a linear relationship of the variations between key product characteristics and key control characteristics. The generic modeling procedure and framework are provided, which involve: (1) an assembly graph (AG) to represent the kinematical constraints among parts and fixtures, (2) an unified method to transform all constraints (mating interface and fixture locators etc.) into a 3-2-1 locating scheme, and (3) a 3D rigid model for variation flow in a single-station process. The generality of the model is achieved by formulating all these constraints with an unified generalized fixture model. Thus, the model is able to accommodate various types of assemblies and provides a building block for complex multistation assembly model, in which the interstation interactions are taken into account. The model has been verified by using Monte Carlo simulation and a standardized industrial software. It provides the basis for variation control through tolerance design analysis, synthesis, and diagnosis in manufacturing systems. DOI: 10.1115/1.2738117

Product Tolerance Allocation in Compliant Multistation Assembly through Variation Propagation and Analytical Target Cascading

Compliant sheet metal assembly is a hierarchical manufacturing process that plays a significant role in automotive product development. Parts are joined in different stations to form the final product (e.g., the vehicle body structure). Dimensional variation is a product attribute of major importance that characterizes quality, and is mainly affected by the variability of parts, fixtures, and j...

Multi-stations sheet metal assembly modeling and diagnostics

In this paper, a multi-station assembly process is modeled for diagnosing automotive body dimensional faults. The proposed approach enables multi-station assembly process modeling based on design information (CAD) and allows system behavior determination based on the in-line measurements of the final product. The method includes generic modeling of the key assembly process characteristics; tool...

JAPAN/USA Symposium on Flexible Automation 2000 MODELING AND DIAGNOSIS OF MULTISTAGE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES: PART I – STATE SPACE MODEL

This two-part paper focuses on the modeling and diagnosis of multistage manufacturing processes. Part I develops a state space model characterizing variation propagation in a multistage process. The state space model describes a discrete-time LTV (Linear Time Varying) stochastic system, which strongly indicates that the existing system and control theory could be used to perform systematic anal...

Identification of Dimensional Variation Patterns on Compliant Assemblies

This paper presents a methodology to diagnose sources of dimensional variation for compliant parts from the measurement data of final assemblies. The method is developed for a single-station assembly process. The proposed diagnosis tool is based on applying a predictive variation propagation model to determine the part-to-part and tooling interaction in the assembly system. The variation propag...
